8.9.10
3:58 P.M.
6lbs, 3oz
18 1/2 inches long
As you know, I was scheduled for an induction on 8.9.10 due to gestational diabetes. Original EDD 8.11.10. On that Monday morning, we got to the hospital at 7a.m. and checked in (with Ryan's mom who volunteers at the information desk) and went up to the maternity floor. My doctor got there around 8 and started the Cytotec and ruptured the membranes. At that point, I was still 3 cm and baby was high. I had to lay down for 1 1/2 hours for it to dissolve. Around 9:30, we walked the halls until about noon. The nurse started the pitocin around 12:30 and I started to feel some slight contractions. She upped it about 4 times (throughout a couple of hours) and I was feeling stronger contractions after each other. She checked me at the first dose and I was still at a 3 and baby was still high. about another hour passed by and I felt like my water broke. The nurse checked and said that she didn't think so, but she would check me again soon. Then I felt a couple of gushes and knew for sure that it did. I felt great knowing that things will get started now. Little did I know....
I started to get really strong contractions after another. Pretty much right on top of each other, so I requested the epidural (but never got it). Suddenly, I was having the strongest contractions ever and felt the need to push. Ryan went to get a nurse and told them that he thinks I need to push. The nurse said I hope not and came in to check me and then paused. She said "I think I feel a foot" Somehow Lexi turned and I didn't feel it. The nurse went to call my doctor to come in right now! (the hospital is about 15 minutes away from the clinic. Later, my doctor said she did 90 on the highway!) Meanwhile, I was having really, really bad contractions on top of each other and was shaking from the pain. The nurse said that we are going down for a c-section because baby was breech. I'm screaming when the anaesthesiologist finally gets there while my body is trying to push out the baby and I had to try to keep her in--very painful!! Then I was wheeled toward the elevator to go to surgery. Well, both were full and no-one was moving! We waited while I was screaming for it to empty! I was SO mad! While in the elevator, I felt that something was coming out. I told the nurse and she said it was the umbilical chord and her foot! That's when I really started to panic! I've read what can happen to the baby if it gets crimped. We got to the O.R. and the anaesthesiologist was the only one in there! Finally I saw my doctor and I guess she grabbed a couple of nurses from somewhere who didn't even have time to hat up! (She told me the story the day after Alexis was born) While my nurse was keeping the chord in my uterus. That HURT LIKE CRAZY! And my body was still trying to push the baby out, So I was trying extremely hard not to let it. My nurse asked the doctor what else she could do and Dr. P just said "Pray." The anaesthesiologist was tying my hands down when I hear the doctor say "Where the hell is the scalpel?" Somehow in an O. freaking R. room, there wasn't one. (later I found out that in her c-section kit where they normally are, it fell to the bottom somehow) I was yelling "you HAVE to be kidding me!!!" and "this is ridiculous!" and such. (Everything seems crazy when you are in pain and worried!) I hear Ryan in the hallway telling me that it will be ok and I'm yelling back at him that I know and that I love him. finally the anaesthesiologist put me out because the doctor was ready. (the baby couldn't get any of the medicine, so they had to do the incision and the meds at around the same time I guess). I woke in the recovery room where I heard my doctor say that I have a daughter and Alexis was here. (she came at 3:58 P.M.) I kept asking how Ryan was and how she was doing. Later when I went up to my room, Ryan was holding Alexis in the nursery when I passed and came into the room with her. I was So amazed at how beautiful she is(was). I later found out that she came out blue and needed some help to breath. Her heart rate was amazing the whole time, so they aren't worried about any future complications with her. We were so blessed to have such awesome nurses and a great doctor to help deliver beautiful Alexis! My doctor also said that in her 10 years delivering babies, Alexis was the closest to not making it, but fully recovered in minutes. Apgar scores were 4,7,then 9. That really scared us when she said it and made us realize how much of a miracle she is.
